The UMKC women's basketball team started the season off right by defeating the Drake University Bulldogs in a tight battle, 70-68.

Sophomore guard Dayon Hall-Jones was nothing short of excellence during her first game for the Roos. She scorched the Bulldogs defense for 21 points, going eight of 19 from the field and making four of five free throws.

Hall-Jones also led the team in assists with a total of five.

Senior guard Chazny Morris chipped in 16 points and connected on three of four from the three-point line.

"This win against Drake was very big," Hall-Jones said. "Starting off the season it's always great to get a good solid win and I just think we played really well together as a team. Everyone did their part."

Hall-Jones was breaking the defense, hitting jump-shots from left to right as she led her team to victory.

"I was glad that I could help my team and glad that we could make a little comeback," Hall-Jones said.

This was a big win for the Lady Roos. Drake is one of the top contenders in the Missouri Valley Conference.

This victory gave the Lady Roos more assurance they can do something special this year in the Summit League.

Head Coach Candace Whitaker said the win gave her team a good idea of where they stand.

Whitaker was also very pleased with Hall-Jones and how she willed her team to victory.

"Dayon is a unique player, she has the ability to take over a game and she called her own number at times," Whitaker said. "She created a lot of things for her teammates and created shots for herself."

The Lady Roos were very excited about the win, but Whitaker said they look to move on and get ready for the University of Tulsa, at 7 p.m. next week in Tulsa, Okla.
