Located at 5106 Cherry St. right next to the location for the new Student Union, the house has been without a tenant since Chancellor Leo Morton came to UMKC in 2008.
Morton and his wife decided to stay at their residence in Leawood, Kan. so their grandson can still get on the bus at their house.
Therefore, the chancellor's residence has transformed into a setting for various campus events.
"As a safety measure, during the spring 2009 construction of the nearby new Student Union, the chancellor's residence was temporarily closed," senior public relations specialist Laura Byerley said. "In the summer of 2009, the chancellor's residence re-opened as a venue for UMKC-sponsored dinners and receptions."
The university acquired the residence in 1958 when Margaret and Dr. Edward Hashinger donated the home and surrounding area.
"Since a major interior and exterior renovation in 1999, the chancellor's residence has offered UMKC a superb setting for campus gatherings," Byerley said.
The residence was recently refurbished thanks to Bill Pfeiffer, Sr., a long-time friend of UMKC. Pfeiffer also provided new furniture for the home.

Let's see. The Chancellor of the University of MISSOURI at Kansas City chooses to live in, not Kansas City, Missouri, but Leawood, Kansas!
One of the biggest problems the City of Kansas City has is that the "power folks," in large numbers, moved out of Kansas City, Missouri, into Johnson County, Kansas, but still seek to run things in Kansas City, Missouri!!!
Given the current circumstances of the Chancellors' Residence on UMKC, I can certainly understand the chancellor's not wanting to live there while construction is going on, or even afterward, with the Student Union so close by, but it would seem to me that if he is going to be paid by the State of Missouri, the least he could do would be to live in the state!!! There are lots of lovely homes in Kansas City, Missouri. (Continued…)
