Roller Derby
The Kansas City Roller Warriors (KCRW) are taking part in the 2010 Polar Plunge.
The plunge is the largest fundraiser for the Special Olympics - Virginia. More than 10,000 people participate every year by plunging into the icy Atlantic Ocean
This and other events take place Feb. 5-6, 2010.
KCRW has participated for the past three years.
They are currently raising money online for the Special Olympics at www.firstgiving.com/rollerwarriors.
Their goal is to raise $2,500 this year.
Fundraising closes April 30, 2010.
Missouri Mavericks
The Central Hockey League has a new franchise this season, the Missouri Mavericks, based right here in the Kansas City Metro area.
The newly constructed Independence Events Center (IEC) is now home to the Mavericks. The arena features a 75,000 square-foot bowl and can seat 7,000.
The IEC is located at 19100 E. Valley View Pkwy., Independence, Mo.
The Mavericks' home-opener is at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. Tickets start at $11.
Men's Soccer
The Roos fell in double-overtime on the road to the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Mastodons, 3-2.
David Sarabia set a new school record with a total of nine goals in the season as a freshman. Sarabia scored the first goal for UMKC against IPFW and gave the Roos an early lead.
Going into half-time, the Roos were up 2-1 but IPFW tied the score in the first 45 seconds of the second half.
The score remained even throughout the first overtime, but the Mastodons scored during the second overtime to take the game.
UMKC finished the regular season with a 6-9-2 record.
They will travel this weekend to Rochester, Mich. for the Summit League Championships.
