Senior guard Chazny Morris was selected to the Pre-Season Summit League first team and was picked to be player of the year.
Morris enters the 2009-10 season with the second most points scored in UMKC women's basketball history with 1,285 points. She trails Penny Waggener, who played for UMKC from 1981-1985 and had a total of 1,475 points.
This is a record that's been waiting to be broken by Morris. But she said there are bigger fish to fry, and one of them smells like making it to the NCAA Tournament.
"I want to go further than we ever gone since I've been here, which would mean going to the tournament," Morris said. "So that means getting first place in the league."
Head Coach Candace Whitaker and her ball club worked hard during the summer for this season and definitely want to see more victories.
"We worked extremely hard, I'm really excited," Whitaker said. "I'm very proud of the players that we have on our team and who they are as individuals and who they are as basketball players."
For her star senior guard (Morris), Whitaker expressed much appreciation and wants the best for her and the team.
"Chaz has a great career here and she's really worked hard and developed herself and her game," Whitaker said. "She continues to get better and not be satisfied and I'm really excited for her to have a great senior year … and hopefully make her team better around her. I think that's going to be the challenge, it's not just Chaz having a good year, but making sure the people around her have a great year."
This year the Lady Roos have seven returners and five new faces, including three transfers and two freshmen.
Transfer Dayon Hall-Jones is a player to keep on the radar.
She came from South Plains Junior College, where she averaged 8.9 points-per-game and 2.6 assists per game, helping her team achieve a 24-7 record last season.
At the junior college level, she led the nation in free throws, shooting .827. She brings great experience to the team at the point guard position.
