Approximately 500 volunteers gathered at the University Playhouse bright and early Saturday morning, prepared to spend four hours working in the Kansas City, Mo. School District (KCMSD).
Six schools were slated to get a helping hand from the Roos, including Central Middle School, Pitcher Elementary School, Benjamin Banneker Elementary, Northeast Middle School and Northeast High School.
Transportation via school buses was provided to and from the schools where volunteers painted, swept parking lots and sidewalks, picked up trash and raked.
When the groups arrived at the schools, painting supplies, gloves, water, trash bags, rakes, brooms and shovels were all sitting out and ready to be used.
The trim was taped off in many hallways so volunteers could just pick up a roller and get to painting.
Other hallways required the Roos to lay paper and tape off woodwork.
Each team had at least two Team Leaders who directed the students in their activities.
Steve Terry, coordinator of Leadership Programming and organizer of the event, said the day was a great success.
The KCMSD expressed its thanks to the university and all of the volunteers.
