University Way was filled with students Friday morning as preparations for the golf cart parade began.

The crews were all at work on their carts and fighting the strong wind.

The parade started at 1 p.m. and set out down 51st Street. It took a detour through the quad after looping around it.

A total of 20 groups participated in the parade, which was open to any student organization.

Eleven of the 20 groups were led by Greek organizations, but a variety of groups participated. They were all sporting Roo school spirit.

"We have had strong Greek spirit, but there seems to be a disconnect on school spirit," Emily Shaw of Chi Omega said. "It's cool that the Greek organizations are getting involved in school spirit."

The Chi Omega group built a float based off of the classic "Just Married" car, but instead it read "Just Won Homecoming."

The Greeks were lining the courtyard with entrants.

Another entrant was fraternity Sigma Pi Epsilon. They created a golf cart covered in camouflaged cardboard, based on the tank from "Animal House."

Delta Zeta created a turtle to represent their mascot. Their crew consisted of about 10 people working between their class schedules.

One member said, "Apparently a lot of people have class on Fridays … who knew."

The Institute for Leadership and Service (ILS) joined the parade with a giant paintbrush.

"We're making a giant paint brush because the theme is paint the town blue," Stacy Sepe said.

They had a group of 10 working on their float for the parade, and were also preparing for a weekend service project cleaning local schools.

Several groups focused on the theme of diversity.

David Green's A&S 100 class created a float they named "Diverse City." A kangaroo head stuck from the hood of their cart.

"Our whole class decided to do a cart today, so here we are," a member of Green's class said.

Another entrant was the Resident Life group. They designed an oak tree, since all of the residence halls are on Oak Street.

They had a group of several students passing through between classes. It was a large group effort to ensure someone was there working on the cart at all times.

The carts were all different styles and types.

The UMKC rugby team created an ad float. The sides were covered with announcements of their season. The theme was "Rough and Rugged" to promote their next game.

The Queer Alliance, who won the homecoming competition last year, was submitting an entry celebrating diversity, but they were having a lot of problems with the wind.

"It's been really windy which is affecting our design skills," Rachel Meyers said. "We won last year's competition to decorate the wooden Roo, and we figured we'd try again."

ILS won the grand prize of a pizza party.
