Plans are in the works for a new student-run radio station run through KCUR.
Student Sarah Troyer took on the idea of the new radio station as her final project for a class with Patty Cahill, general manager of KCUR.
The vision of the radio station was originally born in basketball player Brian Goettinger who graduated this year.
Goettinger is one of the main people involved in the new student union, where the radio station would likely be located.
Troyer is attempting to carry out the idea by handling all the preliminary work along with other students and departments.
Although the Communications Studies would be highly involved in the project, the idea is to get students from all different areas involved.
One of the ways they plan to involve students is by allowing them to earn credit hours for participation.
Troyer feels that incorporating students from all areas will unite the campus under one project.
"Especially being a commuter school it's hard to get people involved and united as well, so it will be a good way to get people involved in more than just their own departments," Troyer said.
She said Robert Beck, recording engineer of the Conservatory, is on board and excited about the idea.
While the idea has caught the attention of some students and faculty, Troyer said, "Right now this is strictly a proposal so it's not actually happening yet, but we want it to."
Troyer said they will need students to help push this plan through and that radio stations have been attempted in the past, but have failed.
The main support behind the radio station needs to be student support and involvement.
"The two visions are one - to unite the campus and get experience, to get lots of different departments experience in doing their specific field work, you know hands on experience," Troyer said. "And two, to help with school spirit, and that's where the unity part comes in as well on both ends."
The plan for the new radio station would be to broadcast it in the new student union, the cafeteria, the dorms and by the Royall Hall hangout, Einstein Bros.
Troyer said this way students walking around campus could be in tune with what's going on around them.
Listeners could hear talk shows and their own music. The station would also do features on UMKC athletes, all to get others interested and involved.
She said the station would be closed circuit and right now they are looking into broadcasting through the internet.
By going that route, they would bypass the need for a license.
Students interested in helping get the radio station idea up and running may contact Troyer at sarahtroyer@umkc.edu.
"We want to show the administration that this is something that the campus wants and is interested in," Troyer said.
