Gov. Jay Nixon visited the Hospital Hill Campus last Thursday to announce that UMKC is one of the many colleges and universities across the state which will be part of the Caring for Missourians program, an initiative to train more than 900 health care professionals to serve in critical-need areas.
Forty million dollars from the state's fiscal year 2010 budget will be distributed to 26 Missouri colleges and universities and UMKC is slated to receive $11,814,460, more than any other institution.
These funds will increase the number of students entering the School of Medicine by seven next year, increase enrollment in the School of Dentistry by 17 from fall 2010 to 2013, add 12 students to the online Master of Science in Nursing program and renovate and outfit additional classroom and lab space for these students.
Although 79 Missouri counties are currently considered "health professional shortage areas," Nixon said students who benefit from this grant are not required to stay and serve in Missouri after graduating.
University of Missouri President Gary Forsee said he looks forward to working with Nixon to ensure this program has a maximum positive impact for the people of Missouri.
