With five weeks remaining before the end-of-season tournament, every Summit League game steadily takes on more importance.
At 4-4 in league play, the UMKC Lady Kangaroos went to battle Jan. 26 with Oral Roberts University at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Though led by another stellar performance from junior guard Chazny Morris, the Roos' record dropped to 4-5.
UMKC had a very promising first half, with Morris dropping 14 points for the team.
(Morris has now scored in double digits in 28 consecutive games.) She was perfect from the floor, going 5-5, 2-2 from long distance and knocking down a pair of free throws from the charity stripe.
"Quote from Coach Whitaker on Chazny," Head Coach Candace Whitaker said.
The Golden Eagles also had a star in freshman guard Georgia Jones, who was lights out from behind the arc, connected on four out of five attempts.
As the first half came to an end the Roos held a small lead with a score of 35-32.
When the second half began, freshmen Roos pounced on the Eagles, going on a 13-4 run.
It was led by the outstanding class of sharp-shooting guard Heather Davis, true-point guard LeAndrea Thomas and defensive specialist forward Mariah Davis.
"Quote from Coach Whitaker on freshman class," Whitaker said.
With a score of 48-36 at the 15:46 mark, the Roos seemed to be dominating the game, but the Eagles begun to soar.
ORU kept chipping away at the lead throughout the second half, finally overtaking UMKC at the 7:30 mark on a free throw from junior forward Janae Voelker.
The Roos fought hard, but were unsuccessful in trying to reverse the result and the game ended with a final score of 68-59.
Jones of the Golden Eagles finished with a career-high of 23 points and Voelker had a respectable double double with 14 points with 12 rebounds.
Morris led the Roos with 21 points and Davis had 12 points. Senior forward Kalei Nance and Thomas had seven points apiece, but Nance proved to be a monster on the boards as she collected 11 rebounds.
The Lady Kangaroos fell to two games below .500 with a record of 9-11 (4-5).
Saturday, Jan. 31 they faced IUPUI in the afternoon of a double-header, with the men's team playing in the evening.
