In preparation for the new year, the Student Government Association (SGA) reviewed the possible increases in student fees based upon the projected consumer price index.
The university is planning for a 4 to 4.5 percent increase in the consumer price index, according to Assistant Vice Chancellor of Auxiliary Services Paris Saunders, who brought the estimates before SGA Nov. 19.
"We will not know the final numbers until the middle of January, but we try to be prepared and our estimates are usually pretty close," Saunders said.
Law regulates that student fees cannot be increased higher than the consumer price index.
Final numbers will be assessed once the index has been announced. Saunders will then bring the updated student fees before the SGA for review.
In other business, the SGA unanimously approved a revised constitution and bylaws.
The first revision of the constitution was discussed at their Oct. 22 meeting. It was not approved because the senators stated concerns about a lack of time to review the documents.
Once again on Nov. 5, the Constitution Revision Committee, headed by SGA President Bridgett Johnson, brought a version of the constitution updated with senators' revisions before the senate for discussion.
The senators moved to table the issue until the Nov. 19 meeting to allow time for all revisions to be completed.
President Johnson said she is excited the constitution passed.
Finally, SGA approved five new organizations including the Anesthesiology Interest Group, Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, College Libertarians, Gold Humanism Society and the Student Veteran Organization.
