Green team preps for new year
The Sustainability Team wrapped up this year's business and began preparing for next year at their final meeting of the semester, Nov. 19.
The team completed all seven of their 2008 objectives, according to Kaye Johnston, director of the Sustainability Team and coordinator of Building Services for Campus Facilities Management.
"I offer up to you dream as big as we can; because if we can dream it, we can do it," Johnston said as the team began prioritizing goals for next year.
The goals were selected using dotocracy, a technique where each member was given five votes which could be devoted to the goal or goals he or she believed were most important.
Expanding the recycling program, transportation and raising awareness were the top issues discussed.
The results of the vote will be announced at the team's January meeting when they begin putting together a plan of action to accomplish the goals.
Chancellor search continues
The search for a new chancellor will continue despite the hiring freeze announced Nov. 17 by University of Missouri President Gary Forsee.
The UMKC Chancellor Search Committee, chaired by Jim Mobberley, professor in the Conservatory of Music and Dance, and John Readey, chair of the UMKC Trustees, announced the search criteria put together after a series of campus listening sessions.
The Committee focused in on eight leading priorities and seven leadership competencies.
Some of the leading priorities include the chancellor must have a vision for the future, must see UMKC as an urban university, should be able to strengthen administrative and faculty relations and should be able to lead through example.
Leadership skills defined include the ability to work effectively with stakeholders of the university at different levels, be decisive and engaging, responsive and energetic, must have long-term career goals consistent with UMKC's need for stability in leadership and must have a value system consistent with the university's.
