Taking a break from conference play, the UMKC volleyball team hosted both teams last week at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Drake's Bulldogs snagged the first six points of the first set. They extended their lead to 14 before the Roos got their fourth point from a Bulldog serving error.
Drake continued to press forward, coming to game point at 24-9. But the Kangaroos proved they weren't going to give up easily, knocking off four straight points before a serving error ended the set in the Bulldogs favor, 25-13.
Drake started the second set with another strong run, 7-1. The Bulldogs maintained a six-point lead, up to 14-8. They then gobbled up seven more points, bringing their lead to 21-8. The Roos responded with a 5-2 run, but the game ended just as the first -a Bulldog victory, 25-13.
After a brief intermission, the Roos came back re-energized, earning the first four points of the third set.
The Bulldogs nipped hard at the Roos' heels, but the UMKC team held its lead for the first half of the set, 13-9.
The Bulldogs fought to only one point away (16-17), but a kill by freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Beck (along with the Bulldogs knocking the ball out of bounds and into the net) changed the game. The Roos hopped up five more points, 22-16.
A few points later, the Roos faced their first set point of the night. They took the game, 25-20, at the hands of sophomore right-side hitter Holly Schmidt.
"Coming in on the third game is really hard to do, so I think it's a great step for our team," Schmidt said. "Coach [Geno Frugoli] told us there were a lot of people playing as individuals and we just needed to play together."
The teams split the first four points of the fourth set, but the next four all went to the Bulldogs. Beck brought the Roos back to within a point, and Schmidt followed up with a kill to tie the game, 10-10.
