UMKC names a vice provost
After completing a search process, UMKC named Cynthia Pemberton the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
She will assume her duties on Nov. 17.
Pemberton served as Acting Associate Provost for the 2007-08 school year at Missouri State University (MSU) and dean of MSU's College of Health and Human Services for five years prior.
The Center for Multidisciplinary Health Education, Research and Service was established at MSU under her leadership.
"Dr. Pemberton brings to this position both extensive experience and a passion for promoting student success," Dr. Ron MacQarrie, dean of the UMKC School of Graduate Studies and chair of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Search Committee, said.
Pemberton also has 10 years past experience as a member of faculty at UMKC in addition to serving as the chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education and Interim Associate Dean for the School of Education.
UMKC and KU join alliance
With a goal of assisting persons with disabilities to improve their lives, the UMKC Institute for Human Development and the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities received a $4 million grant from the Administration on Developmental Disabilities.
The new program, called "A National Gateway on Self-Determination for Persons with Developmental Disabilities," will receive $800,000 per year for five years to be devoted to promoting self-determination in people with disabilities, helping them make beneficial life decisions.
The alliance will develop programs to teach self-determination through various methods including advanced technology. Creating a national web portal that would bring together users has been discussed as one possibility.
"This is a great day for the power of partnerships and bringing research to practice," Dr. Carl F. Calkins, director of the UMKC Institute for Human Development, said in a press release.
Calkins will partner with Dr. Michael Wehmeyer, executive director of the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities at KU's Life Span Institute, as the co-principal investigators of the program. The alliance will consist of a five-member leadership consortium also including the University of Oregon Center on Human Development, the Westchester Institute for Human Development at the New York Medical College and the University of Illinois-Chicago Department of Disability and Human Development.
Raising student alcohol awareness
UMKC celebrated Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week from Oct. 20-24.
The MindBody Connection partnered with the Counseling Center to offer alcohol screening tests that identify an individual's relationship to alcohol.
Resources about the dangers of alcohol and proper precautions to take while drinking were also made available.
The screening is available at the Counseling Center's Web site at www.umkc.edu/chtc/counseling/. Click on the Alcohol and Drugs link.
