Kipp heats up the links
Freshman golfer Kelsey Kipp took home a second place finish from the Oral Roberts University (ORU) Shootout Oct. 6 and 7 in Tulsa, Okla.
Kipp shot rounds of 80, 72 and 75 for a three-round total of 227. Her sizzling performance boosted her team to a ninth place finish out of a field of 18 schools.
As a team, the Kangaroos turned in scores of 331, 312 and 320 for a three-round score of 963, good enough for UMKC to finish in the thick of things.
The host team from ORU provided both the team and individual winner. The Golden Eagles posted scores of 301, 305 and 307 to end the two-day event with a 913 stroke total. ORU's Christy Carter sweetened the result with the top individual finish.
The UMKC women's golf team will head to South Carolina later this month for the final event of its fall schedule. There they will compete Oct. 27 and 28 in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament.
Roos practice at Sprint Center
On Oct. 17, UMKC men's and women's basketball teams will begin their preparations for the 2008-09 season at the College Basketball Experience inside the Sprint Center.
Returning head coaches Matt Brown and Candace Whitaker will conduct their respective squads through open practice sessions from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.
Coach Whitaker and the UMKC women will open their schedule at 2 p.m., Nov. 8 at Swinney Recreation Center (SRC) in an exhibition game against Rockhurst University.
Coach Brown and the Kangaroo men's team begin their season with a rare SRC appearance on Nov. 14 against the University of North Dakota. The tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m.
There will be no admission charged and the event is open to the public. However, persons wanting to attend are advised to RSVP at www.umkcrootickets.edu.
Golfing in the Golden State
The UMKC men's golf team walked away from the links with a sixth-place tie at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate tournament held Oct. 4 and 5 in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Kangaroos shot a combined total of 898 (301-301-296) over three rounds to finish even with the team from the University of California-Santa Barbara.
UMKC placed two golfers in the tournament's top 25. Junior Alex Hogben (76-74-72; 222) tied for 14th place overall, and senior Michael Schnegelberger (75-76-74; 225) tied for 24th in the field.
Colorado State University (298-292-287; 877) took first place team honors while Denver University's Daniel Wax (69-76-68; 213) touted the best individual score.
Oct. 27 and 28, the men will be in Arlington, Texas for the UTA Waterchase Invitational.
