UMKC inducts inaugural Hall of Fame class
The UMKC Athletics Department announced their selections for their inaugural Hall of Fame class in a release Sept 30.
Former Head Coach and Athletic Director Lee Hunt headed a list of ten inductees introduced at the UMKC Athletics Kick-Off Party.
Also included on the list were basketball players Bill Frerking, Ronnie Schmitz, Stephanie Worthy and Katie Houlehan; golfer Robert Russell, soccer player Larry Scheller, volleyball player Catalina Suarez-Moss, track-and-field high jumper Matt Voelker, and longstanding UMKC benefactor Stanley Durwood.
Men's team takes to the links and place fifth
The UMKC men's golf team shot a team score of 911 (310-299-302) over 54 holes to take fifth at the Bob Hurley Auto Oral Roberts University (ORU) Shootout Sept. 29 and 30 in Broken Arrow, Okla.
The Kangaroos' Alex Hogben, junior, continued to finish strong, tying for 11th place (80-67-77; 224), while senior Michael Schnegelberger (74-80-74; 228) tied for 19th.
Senior Brent Iliff (76-77-77; 230) rounded out top 25 finishers for the Roos, shooting his way into a tie for 24th place.
Texas State University (TSU) took home team honors with a combined score of 874 (293-290-291) over the two day event.
TSU's Corey Roberson slipped a bit on the final 18 but still walked away with the first place individual win, carding a score of 212 (68-69-75).
Women golfers finish 13th
Taking part Sept. 29 and 30 in the Johnny Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo., the UMKC women managed a 13th place result out of a field of 18 teams. The Roos shot a 97 over par two day total of 961 (319-321-321) as a team.
Freshman Kelsey Kipp led the way for the Roos, ending the tournament with a 235 strokes overall (78-74-83) to finish in a tie for 34th.
UMKC junior Sally Meiners tied for 43rd place with a final score of 238 (78-74-83).
Cross country squads run in OSU Jamboree
Runners from UMKC's cross country team traveled to Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday to take part in the Oklahoma State University Jamboree. Both squads finished behind most of the field.
In the men's 8,000 meter competition, UMKC finished last out of a field of 23 teams. Senior Laban Mutai's time of 27:33 landed him in 108th place overall. Freshman Brett Guemmmer clocked in at 28:03, making him the Kangaroo's second highest finisher (128th place).
As a team, the women fared little better, ending the competition in the 6,000 meter run in 21st position in a 25-team field. Sophomore Alex Harkins' 23:12 effort was good enough for 71st place overall, while freshman Aubrey Frederking timed out at 23:36 for 86th place.
