Editor's note: This is the first of a weekly series about the upcoming elections and the issues pertinent to UMKC students.

• The upcoming election provides an ample amount of volunteering opportunities for students to get involved around the Kansas City area.

The Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners (KCEB) is currently looking for Election Day volunteers. According to their Web site, volunteers must be registered voters within Jackson County, and indicate party affiliation.

Responsibilities vary from supervising the registration book for voter eligibility to ensuring proper ballots are given to voters. Training is required, but compensation is offered ranging from $25 to $125. More information can be found at http://www.kceb.org.

Those who have already chosen a candidate for the national election can consider volunteering for the Republican, Democrat, Green or Libertarian Party.

McCain's campaign does not have headquarters in Kansas City. However his Midwest Regional Office can be reached at (515) 418-9270 for more information about how to get involved.

Obama supporters can contact his Kansas City headquarters located at 3100 Gilham Plaza.

The Green or the Libertarian parties are two of the options for those looking for an alternative to the two-party system.

The Green Party has nominated six-term Georgian Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney as their 2008 presidential nominee and community activist Rosa Clemente, as her vice presidential running mate.

The Kansas City Green Party meets the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., at 3936 Broadway, Aquarius Books..

The Libertarian Party chose former Republican Congressman Bob Barr as its candidate. His running mate is businessman Wayne Allyn Root.

To volunteer with the Libertarian Party, contact the Missouri student coordinator at (417) 882-9550.

For these parties, volunteers might spend time calling prospective voters, canvassing the Kansas City area or even planning a convention watch party for your candidate.

• This week is also the beginning of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Held in Denver, Colo., the DNC starts on Aug. 25 and ends on Aug. 27.

According to the official DNC Web site, the convention brings together delegates chosen during the primaries. The delegates then cast their vote in favor of one of the democrats who ran during the primaries and the party officially nominates the winner as their candidate.

The Green Party officially chose its candidates at its convention on July 12 in Chicago, Ill. The Libertarians held their convention between May 22 and May 26 in Denver, Colo.

The Republican Convention begins on Sept. 1 and ends on Sept. 4. The convention will be held in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.
