Kangaroos projected to finish
fourth in Summit League preseason coach's poll
A consensus of seven Summit League head coaches have picked the UMKC men's soccer team to end their 2008-09 season with a fourth place conference finish according to the Summit League preseason coach's poll. The Kangaroos, who ended last year's campaign with a 7-8-4 record (2-2-2 Summit League), received 23 points, which included one first-place vote. Oakland University led all league schools with 35 total points and five first-place votes.
Klein to take game overseas
UMKC Women's Basketball all-time leading shot-blocker Alysa Klein has signed on to play pro basketball in the Netherlands this fall. Klein, who scored 1,212 points to complement her 213 blocks during her career at UMKC, will be suiting up for the Perik Jumpers in Tubbergen. Projected as a "second American asset" according to the team Web site, the 6-foot-2 inch Klein will join former University of North Dakota center Ashley Langen this fall to bolster up presence in the paint for the Jumpers.
Gurney hired for Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athletes Services post
Ursula Gurney, former intern assistant counselor at Ohio State University, has been selected to be Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athletes Services at UMKC.
At Ohio State, Gurney spent six years as an academic specialist at OSU's Student Athlete's Support Service Office. She also served as an undergraduate instructor and teaching assistant within the university's history department.
UMKC Athletic Director Tim Hall expressed confidence in his new hire.
"Ursula will do a great job enhancing the academic support for our student-athletes while building strong relationships with the faculty, staff and advising areas," Hall said.
UMKC volleyball team serves up an exhibition match
Head Coach Geno Frugoli and the UMKC Women's Volleyball Team are hosting the First Annual Alumni Challenge this Friday at the Swinney Recreation Center. The event will pit past UMKC Volleyball players against the current squad of Kangaroos in an exhibition contest. Game time is at 5:30 p.m. A reception and dinner is scheduled afterward at Californos Restaurant, 4124 Pennsylvania Ave. Frugoli and UMKC Athletic Director Tim Hall will be featured guest speakers at the post-game event.
UMKC Cross Country Team Slated for Six Events in 2008
The 2008 season for the UMKC men's and women's cross country will hit the ground running Saturday, Aug. 30 in Lawrence, Kan. at the Bob Timmons Invitational, kicking off a scheduled six meet campaign. The event calendar for the Roos includes the Arkansas Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival Oct. 18 in Fayetteville and the Summit League Championships Nov. 1 in Shreveport La.
