During May, UMKC sent a new group of graduates on to the next stages of their lives.

On Friday, May 9, UMKC held graduation ceremonies for the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration. On Saturday May 10, ceremonies were held for the School of Biological Sciences, Conservatory of Music and Dance, School of Computing and Engineering, School of Dentistry, School of Education, School of Law, School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy. Graduates of the UMKC School of Medicine held graduation on May 29.

During the first part of the A&S graduation, students with last names A-L, A&S Dean Karen Vorst presented the candidates for graduation.

"This is a new beginning and I wish for you the best life has to offer," Vorst said.

Provost Gail Hackett presided over the ceremony, offering a brief history of the College.

"The College of Arts and Sciences, which was chartered in 1979, is the original school of the University of Kansas City," she said. " … Whatever your skill, whatever your interest, you've found a compatible program in the College of Arts and Sciences."

The ceremony's commencement address was given by UMKC graduate and Vietnam veteran Gary Seabaugh, PhD. Seabaugh, a recipient of UMKC's Alumnus Achievement Award, told the graduates and audience that a degree presents challenges real life never does and described the graduates as "a treasure to all of us."

"As soon as you find out there's an end to it," Seabaugh said, "you start over."
