08.11.08 - UMKC Provost Gail Hackett released a statement at 11:42 a.m. giving some details of an agreement reached with Drs. Keith Haddock and Walter S. Carlos Poston II.

The professors have agreed to leave their tenured positions on Sept. 30, 2008. They will continue to receive their salaries until August 31, 2009, the end of their contract year. They have also agreed not to apply for employment with UMKC anytime in the future.

According to the press release, this agreement will avoid lengthy proceedings by UMKC to revoke the professors' tenure and dismiss them.

In July 2007, UMKC agreed to a $1.1 million out-of-court settlement with Dr. Linda Garavalia, associate professor of Psychology, and Megan Pinkston-Camp, a former psychology graduate student. In a lawsuit filed in 2006, the two alleged there was a hostile sexual environment in the Health Research Group (HRG) Lab supervised by Haddock and Poston at UMKC.

UMKC Director of Affirmative Action Grace Hernandez conducted an investigation in fall 2007, interviewing more than 70 students, staff and faculty. Today's press release was the first time any information of the results of her investigation has been made public.

It stated Hernandez "felt the evidence was inconclusive as to whether or not there was a hostile work environment in the HRG Lab."

A full story will follow in the first fall issue of U-News on Aug. 18.

Thank you. This has been a long time coming.

$1.1 million and resignations definitely speak the truth of what occurred.

If the evidence was inconclusive readers might want to know, if possible, why UMKC spent the money on the settlement.

They fail to mention that the professors REQUESTED to leave the hell hole and would have more than willingly undergone the tenure review process if it meant that Ms. (Continued…)

Maybe it's all just a big experiment. You know, like that David Gale movie with Kevin Spacey.
