After a wild week of Wild, Wild West-themed courtwarming events, all the hours of campaigning paid off for two UMKC students.

At the Courtwarming game Saturday, March 2, Spencer Williams and Tara Kloeppel were crowed 2008 king and queen.

The week of courtwarming events provided an opportunity to meet many students, Kloeppel said.

"Not only did I become better acquainted with the people heavily involved in Courtwarming Week, but it also encouraged me to reach out to student groups and individuals I hadn't previously," she said.

Kloeppel said she is excited to be able to represent the campus.

"Being the queen further cements my love for our campus," she said. "I can't wait to encourage campus involvement and get everyone as spirited about UMKC as I am."

Williams was also excited to be voted courtwarming royalty and thanked his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, for its support.

"Winning … in front of all the people who helped me win the election was a great feeling to say the least," he said. "All the people who helped me gather votes, hand out candy and campaign are really the ones who should be enjoying this prestigious honor."

Both candidates are glad to be able to represent the campus to incoming freshmen.

"To be able to talk to incoming freshmen and get them excited about coming and joining the Roo family is going to be an exciting time for me," Williams said.

Kloeppel agreed and added their differences make their representations of UMKC more diverse.

"Although [Williams] and I have a lot in common, I think we represent two very different ways students can connect to their campus and make a difference," she said. "After the period of freshman orientation has ended, I look forward to continuously participating in campus activities and philanthropies as the courtwarming queen and a leader at UMKC."
