Kansas City is known for its barbecue, and one of the Kansas City barbecue greats brought its famous flavor to UMKC. Gate's barbecue could be enjoyed by all who visited the UMKC cafeteria for lunch on Thursday, Feb. 28.

George and Arzelia Gates, son and daughter to local business owner Ali Gates, visited the cafeteria to promote the Gates classic flavor as well as lend a hand to the kitchen staff.

"We want to stay in touch with the younger generation so they can grow up knowing the Gates barbecue experience," Arzelia said. "We are passing down a legacy to the youth of Kansas City."

The cafeteria was abuzz as students scurried to have their plates filled with smoked meats. The hustle-and-bustle of students in the cafeteria was nothing new to Sodexho employees.

Seven dollars bought students and faculty the opportunity to gorge themselves on an all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet of brisket, ham, turkey and various other delectable side dishes.

"Due to the high cost of catering Gates meat in the Union Cafeteria, we can only offer our Gates BBQ Luncheon once per year," said Jerry Pizors, general manager for Sodexho Food Services. Gates' sauces are for sale in the cafeteria and in the UMKC-Store through the end of March. - Clayton Sedler
