UMKC Theater Department celebrates founder
The UMKC Theater Department will celebrate the birthday of its founder Dr. Patricia McIlrath on Jan. 20. The evening will include a presentation of Dr. Felicia Hardison Londré's book "The Enchanted Years of the Stage: Kansas City at the Crossroads of American Theater." Dr. McIlrath was the first chair of the Theater Department (then the Speech Department) after its split from the English Department and founded the Missouri Repertory Theater in 1964, according to the Theater Department's Web site, cas.umkc.edu/theatre. The event will be held in the Grant Hall Theater at 5228 Charlotte St. and is presented by the Theater Department and The Kansas City Repertory Theater.
Missouri teachers' salaries among lowest in nation
In a meeting of the Missouri House of Representatives last Wednesday, Speaker Rod Jetton (R) called for legislation to increase pay for Missouri teachers. The average salary for a teacher in Missouri is $40,462, and only eight states pay teachers less, according to The Associated Press. On proposed plan would require teachers' salaries to start at $31,000 and would create a salary base that would grow as teachers become more experienced. Some teacher unions oppose setting up pay standards for experienced teachers. According to AP, of Missouri's 524 schools, 400 would have to raise salaries.
