The UMKC Career Services Center conducted an etiquette dinner Oct. 10 in the University Center to better equip students with proper table manners.

"Each fall, during career week, we conduct an etiquette dinner," said Sandi Dale, Manager at the Career Services Center. "It has come to our attention that students don't know what to do over a meal and people can lose jobs by not having proper manners over a meal."

To keep that job, there are certain things that every person should know about table etiquette.

• The most important rule is to follow the host/hostess/interviewer/boss. They dictate when the meal begins.

• There is a very simple rule in a formal table setting. The drink glasses and bread plate will be on the right and left of the dinner plate, respectively.

• The napkin goes on the lap. It does not get tucked. It is placed on the side of the plate when the meal is finished.

• It is disrespectful and bad manners to speak with your mouth full. It is even worse to chew with your mouth open.

• Dropped the fork or spoon? Proper etiquette is to leave it there and inform the host/hostess/waiter.

• There shouldn't be any slurping sounds when eating soup. Use the side of the spoon and sip the soup.

• Formal dining is not a place for comments or tips on how to make the food better. These are all basic manners that are often forgotten. The goal of a person attending any formal setting is to be diplomatic and friendly.

Every company wants a competent and mannered employee. -Minhaj Muneer
