It doesn't take long to figure out senior golfer Whitney Davis is a friendly, family-oriented person. This makes Davis a good fit as the matriarch of a young UMKC women's golf team. She is the bridge between the past and the future.

Davis says the team dynamics are different due to her being the only senior. However, she is quick to point out that different is not a bad thing.

"Everybody gets along really well," Davis said. "But it is kind of a surreal experience for me. [Nobody] can share in the memories that I have from past seasons but at the same time we get to create new ones."

Davis, a Colorado native and transfer from Chadron State College in Nebraska, established herself as a leader at UMKC early on. Her solid play on the links and pleasant personal nature away from them make her ideal for the role she now occupies.

UMKC Director of golf and women's head coach J.W. VanDenBorn relishes having Davis on the team.

"Whitney is a great leader on and off the golf course," VanDenBorn said. "Her work ethic … her desire to be at a championship level [and] her ability to give advice and council to some of our younger players is outstanding. She is a big asset for us."

Davis said being a good leader is one of her main goals for the season. She knows the things she does now will affect her teammates in the future.

Davis has some personal goals as well.

"I want to play well and I would like to make All-Conference this season," Davis said. "I just want to be a better all-around player."

Davis' busy schedule keeps her involved in a myriad of activities. Aside from being a member of the women's golf team, Davis also interns at the UMKC Athletic Department office and she is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The Academic All-Conference performer still finds time for having fun, and that fun comes in all forms.

Davis loves watching sports, particularly hockey, as well as taking in the occasional movie. She likes to be out and about whenever time allows.

"I love being outdoors," Davis said. "I like to stay active and I love participating in all kinds of different sports."

Davis enjoys the Kansas City area and likes that the UMKC campus is so close to the Plaza where she goes to hang out with friends and take in the surroundings. One of her favorite activities is eating sushi at the Kona Grill.

Family, however, is above all else in Davis' life. She maintains a close relationship with her mother and professes her mom is her "best friend."

Davis appreciates the sacrifices her mother has made and her mother's influence has shaped who she is as a person.

Nothing is more telling about Davis than the company she would choose for a fanciful dinner. If she could have dinner with any three people in the world, Davis said she would bring her late grandfather, her mom and her high school golf coach.

As for her career plans, the communication studies major will attend law school after graduation. She hopes to find a niche somewhere in sports-entertainment law.
