Eleanor Clift to speak at UMKC
Eleanor Clift, author and regular on the "McLaughlin Group," will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Pierson Auditorium. In a lecture called "A Public and Private Death," Clift will discuss caring for her dying husband while reporting on the Terri Shiavo case and how she balanced these conflicting roles.
UMKC Student recognized at annual Stem Cell summit
UMKC student Jeff McCaffrey received the 2007 National Student Advocacy Award during the annual Stem Cell summit in Boston, Mass. McCaffrey is a volunteer for The Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, which received the National Grassroots Advocacy Award. The summit focused on the future of stem cell research in treating devastating illnesses.
Health of Kansas Citians at odds with national average
The Kansas City Metropolitan area is not up to par with the rest of the nation on health, reported bizjournals.com. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (BCBSKC) held a summit on Oct. 3 to discuss Kansas City's health shortcomings and ideas for improvement. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and former School of Medicine Dean Dr. James Mongan spoke at the event. According to bizjournals, BCBSKC insures 900,000 people and will release scorecards through 2010 tracking Kansas City's progress. According to the 2007 scorecard, Kansas City is above the national averages for obesity and smoking and below for people 65 and older receiving flu vaccinations.
Bloch School hosts entrepreneurial awards dinner
The 22nd Annual Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) awards dinner, hosted by the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration and its Council for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, will be held Oct. 8 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel. The International Entrepreneurs of the Year award will be presented to Kate and Andy Spade, founders of the Kate Spade NEW YORK designer brand. L. William Zahner, Chief Executive Officer of an architectural and artistic metal fabrication company called A. Zahner Company, will receive the Regional Entrepreneur of the Year award. The Marion and John Kreamer Entrepreneur in Volunteer Community Service Award will be presented to the Byron G. Thompson Family for their support of local civic causes and their influence on the banking industry.
