Sunfire Ceramics wants to display and sell local art.
Cheryl Roth, owner of the shop, has opened a new location in Kansas City at 7100 Wornall Road.
At the Sunfire Ceramics in Lawrence, Kan., Roth displays jewelry. However, the shop in Waldo has more space to display paintings and wall art.
"I would just like to be able to allow people to have a place where their work can be seen and potentially bought," Roth said.
There is a 25 percent commission for the shop if a piece sells.
Roth wants to have a few pieces by a number of different artists, instead of doing a single artist show.
Sunfire Ceramics is also putting out a "Campus Call for Creativity." Roth invites students to come to the shop and paint a 6-inch ceramic tile which will be used to decorate the new shop.
The tile is free to anyone who comes in.
"We are looking for images people find they are inspired to paint in their own way," Roth wrote in an e-mail.
Anyone who paints a tile will receive a $6 gift certificate to use in the shop.
Every tile painter will also be entered into a contest. Three people will win first, second and third place and will win $50, $40 and $30 respectively in Sunfire Ceramics gift certificates.
Roth will offer a half-price paint fee of $2 until November for UMKC students who show their IDs when they go to the shop to paint.
Sunfire Ceramics can be reached at (816) 361-2229. They are open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. They are closed Monday and Tuesday and evening sessions can be scheduled by appointment.
