Artspaces not for the faint of art

The room is completely dark except for a light coming from a single screen at the front of Epperson Auditorium.
All of a sudden sounds erupt from the speakers, bass notes accompanied by the sounds of a young person speaking in a foreign language.
On the screen a variety of swirls and patterns appear as if in a dream punctuated by jolts in the beats of the music.
Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Artsounds series officially began.
There were no seats left in Epperson Auditorium. Several people, myself included, stood against the back wall and let these sights and sounds engulf us.
Artsounds is a collaboration between the students of the Kansas City Art Institute and members of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.
Every second Tuesday of the month these two creative forces come together to produce new and invigorating art designed to twist your imagination in new ways.
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I went to the show. Part of me expected someone to be flicking a light switch on and off to drum beats, but what I found was something much more appealing. I appreciated it was something new and different and it made me think.
People whose interest in art extends as far as the work of Thomas Kincaid should be wary. The works seen at this show can be considered "far out there." It's true projected patterns to music and opera probably won't appeal to the mass crowd.
To those who decide to go to the show, my advice is to not try to read into everything you see. The program they hand out gives you a fair idea of what the artist wants to convey.
Just watch, absorb and try to let the feelings and emotions wash over you. The auditorium is also very small and can be hard to find, so I advise arriving early to find a seat.
These concerts are a great, free way to spend an evening with friends and to support fellow students in the area and to expand your mind to new ideas about what art is.
A new show of Artsounds will be produced every second Tuesday of every month during the fall and spring semesters. The dates are Oct. 9, Nov. 13, Feb. 12, March 11 and April 8.
They are performed at 8 p.m. in Epperson Auditorium at the Kansas City Art Institute, 4415 Warwick Blvd.
