The Office of Research Services, 5211 Rockhill Road, offers a variety of services to UMKC faculty and staff in the pursuit of funding research.
Their mission is "[t]o provide support and leadership to faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students around their activities related to research and other creative arts," said Dr. John Baumann, vice provost for Research and director of the Office of Research Services.
The office offers pre-award administrative support to faculty applying for research grants, such as identifying funding opportunities, outlining proposal requirements and assisting in proposal production and submission. The office also offers post-award administrative support related to receiving and processing funds.
"Our job is to help them take their ideas through the necessary applications to receive funds," Baumann said.
In addition to assisting researchers receiving external funding, the Office of Research Services has a smaller internal grant program. Applications are accepted twice a year and proposals can be funded up to $7,000.
Public Service Programs are also directed by the Office of Research Services. These programs receive their funding entirely from outside grants, though the research is done through UMKC.
After funding is received, the office continues supporting the research. They coordinate and maintain research equipment and facilities.
"We help … get the equipment to the people who need it," Baumann said.
Additional components of research support are the Institutional Review Boards. When human subjects are used in a research project, the boards must ensure the subjects are treated appropriately, are properly informed and that their rights are not violated. Students Engaged in Artistic and Academic Research (SEARCH), a UMKC program for undergraduate research, must also be evaluated by the Institutional Review Boards. Similarly, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the treatment of animals in research projects.
