Three UMKC track-and-field athletes struck gold and 12 others recorded top-five finishes as the Roos opened their 2007 outdoor season at the Emporia State University Spring Twilight Meet, held in Emporia, Kan. last Thursday.
The Kangaroos were led by the first-place finish of junior high jumper Courtney Huber, who leapt to a UMKC school record height of 5-08.50.
Teammate Kathryn Tennku, sophomore, took fourth in the event with an effort of 5-03. Jessica Hulbert, junior, finished fifth at 4-11.
Huber shared the previous record of 5-07 with Lynette Williams, who set the mark for the Roos in 1999. Huber, coming off a Mid-Continent Conference title win at the Mid-Con Indoor Championships, also owns UMKC's indoor record in the event at 5-8.
Sophomore Charlie Larson emerged victorious in the men's triple jump, beating out Emporia's Matt Koeling by several inches with a UMKC personal best bound of 48-03.50. Larson also placed fourth in the men's long jump with a rangy leap of 21-04.
Lewis Hutfles, junior, garnered a fourth-place distinction for the Roos at 36-10.50.
UMKC senior distance runner Amanda James triumphed in the women's 3000-meter run. James, a 5-foot-5-inch local athlete from Park Hill High School, finished ahead of Park University's Melinda Jansen with a time of 11:15.18.
The Kangaroos took second and third place in the women's 100-meter dash. Junior Summer Ketron timed out at 12.40. She was followed by sophomore Jovanda Cole, who finished at 12.56.
Mid-Con honored scholar Kaleb Stoppel, junior, placed third in the men's high jump. Stoppel, hailing from Osage City, Kan., cleared 6-02 in the event. Fort Hays State's Kelsey Koerner took first with a jump of 6-06. UMKC junior Colin Smith placed fifth, jumping 6-0.
UMKC's Russell Dotson, senior, Anthony Boyer, sophomore, Peter, Kisicki, junior, and Jason Slieter, freshman, combined their speed to orchestrate a second-place showing in the men's 4-by-100 meter relay with a time of 42.92.
The Kangaroo women took third in their 4-by-400 event. Stephanie Lasley, senior, Stephanie Williams, junior, Ketron and Cole dashed to a time of 48.61.
Junior Justin Simmonich's time of 4:23.96 in the men's 1500-meter run was good enough for fifth in the field. On the women's side, junior Lacey Modlin finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.46.
Next up for the UMKC outdoor track-and-field team is the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo., March 30-31.
