Unfortunately for Card fans on campus, the vehicle was lost and was actually headed for the Rockhurst University campus.
"They told me they got lost over there," said Rockhurst director of public relations and marketing, Katherine Frohoff.
Frohoff said the trophy visit was the culmination of a promise made by Redbird president Mark Lamping, a Rockhurst alum, to Reverend Thomas B. Curran, president of the university.
Lamping visited Rockhurst on Jan. 24 to speak with students and alumni. It just happened to be the same day the U.S. Poet Laureate Donald Hall offered readings of his poetry.
Frohloff said the day's events begged for a promotional tie-in and alumni were invited to spend the afternoon and evening enjoying "Beer, Brats, and a Bard."
The trophy sat in Rockhurst's student union from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday.
Weighing in at 30 pounds, made of 100 percent sterling silver with a 24 karat gold inlay and valued at more than $125,000, Major League Baseball's highest prize was ogled over by a long line of Cardinal backers.
"It has a busier social life than most people I know," said Verna Cooper of Market Partners in St. Louis.
The public relations firm has already visited Tulsa, Okla., Decatur, Ill., and Columbia, Mo., on the trophy tour. The biggest crowd was at a shopping mall in Jefferson City, Mo., where 604 patrons waited in line to be photographed next to baseball's version of the holy grail.
Next up for the firm was a trip to Branson and then on to Joplin at the southwest tip of Missouri.
