The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs honors seven full-time students active within the community.
"This recognition is based on the premise that the University should honor the students who maintain high scholastic performance while actively participating in University programs outside the classroom," said Mel Tyler, interim vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
The Vice Chancellor's Honors Program is for graduating seniors who excel in academic achievement and service to the campus and community.
A list of eligible students is sent to full-time faculty and staff to review and nominate students. A committee of faculty and staff review nominations.
The recipients are: Alice Altschul, criminal justice and criminology; Brian Bustos, English; Tiffany Fields, urban affairs; Tyler Richenberger, business administration; Andrew Stephens, biology; Matthew Treaster, liberal arts and six-year medicine program; and Shawn West, liberal arts and medicine.
"I was quite humbled people noticed how hard I have worked around here; it was really a great feeling," Treaster said.
The University will recognize recipients at a breakfast between 8 and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15 in 106 University Center. Students will also be honored in a campus display of photographs.
"This honor greatly strengthens my support and appreciation of UMKC," Altschul said.
"Getting nominated … is just one of many experiences I've had at UMKC where someone went out of their way to help me along in my college journey," Bustos said. "I'm also a little suspicious this award might just be a reflection of 4.5 years of the best sucking up ever."
