Whether a procrastinator or a studious person, all students need a break while studying. Finals are Dec. 11-15.
Many upcoming events will inspire the students as they continue to hit the books. The Activity and Program Council (APC) has contributed to the needs of students throughout the years at UMKC, and the importance of their service is significantly stressed this time of year.
"We are trying to help students be more relaxed during the finals because they study a lot," said Anastasia Varlamova, APC event coordinator. "It is the most stressful part of the year."
Accommodations of students' stress include the Spa and Craft Day, sponsored by APC and co-sponsored by Omicron Delta Kappa on Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alumni Room, University Center.
"These events are traditional. We have them every semester to help students," said Varlamova.
Spa and Craft Day was created to calm students' minds and bodies before a stressful week of finals. Students will get pampered with splendid massages while they listen to comforting music. APC will also offer ways for students to stretch their imaginative muscles with effortless crafts.
The Midnight Breakfast, also sponsored by APC and co-sponsored by Residential Life, Sodexho, and Campus Crusade for Christ, will be held Dec. 11 from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the University Center cafeteria.
The "wellness wheel" helps APC organize their focus to fit six distinct areas. APC's focuses are the social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and occupational well-being of students.
"What APC does is we plan on the account of the wellness wheel," said Jessica Long, APC advisor. "It helps kids manage their stress to help cope and relax during the finals."
All APC events are meant to target those areas. A chance to relax gives students the time to replenish each focus.
The Student Academic Support Services building also offers accommodations during finals week with quiet study in Room 108, group study in Room 100, and a stress-free zone in Room 215. Free food, games and giveaways will be offered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Students will have more access to Miller Nichols Library, which is extending its hours for finals in response to the requests of students. The library will be open Dec. 10 from noon to 1 a.m., Dec. 11-14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Dec. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
