All dead after 737 crashes outside Lagos, Nigeria
A Boeing 737 crashed en route to the capital city of Nigeria on Saturday, killing all 117 passengers aboard. The plane was headed from Lagos to Abuja and lost contact with the control tower minutes after taking off at 8:45 p.m. Saturday night.
Confusion at the crash scene resulted in contradicting reports over the weekend.
Original reports stated half of the people on board had survived, and medical personnel were urged to rush to the scene. However, later announcements reported all the people on the plane died.
The airline said 117 people were on board, 111 passengers and six crew members. No additional details were offered.
This is the first crash for the privately owned Nigerian company Bellview. The company opened it doors 10 years ago and operates a fleet of mostly Boeing 737s throughout West Africa. The company is reportedly among the most reliable airlines shuttling between Nigeria's regional airports, where crowds often battle for seats on planes.
