Cameras record suspects at Oak Street garage

Security cameras in UMKC's Oak Street parking garage recorded suspects breaking into cars last Wednesday morning. The suspects, a woman and two men, were in a dark-colored Suburban and a red Camaro or Firebird. Cameras recorded them breaking into cars and stealing purses, stereos and electronics.

The security cameras which tracked the thieves were installed after a series of break-ins in the parking garage last year.

Bloch School enrollment increases

Enrollment is up for the third year in a row at the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration. Undergraduate enrollment for fall 2005 was 585, an 8 percent increase over last fall's enrollment.

Additionally, a market research company reported students gave UMKC high scores for individual attention, advising and connection to the community.

Many in the school credit these successes to the Living-Learning Community in Oak Street Residence Hall. The program acclimates new students through interaction with faculty and other students. Students in the program also tour area businesses.

The Bloch School plans to begin offering new subject majors in 2006 based on student input and other factors.

University hosts fundraiser for Pakistani victims

The Pakistani Students' Association is heading the UMKC response to the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that devastated large portions of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India on Oct. 8. The group is collecting food, water, money, clothing (new or very gently used) and new unopened medical supplies.

Students can donate at bins in both the Cherry Street and Oak Street Residence Halls.

Two more bins are located near the University Center.

Other bins will be scattered around campus by the Quad, Swinney Recreation Center, Hospital Hill campus, the Dental and Law Schools and in Miller Nichols Library.

Also, there will be a dinner/fundraiser to raise awareness about the earthquake's devastating effects. The event will be held at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, located at 119th and Lowell in Shawnee Mission, Kan., on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for students and $20 for community members, and donations are also welcome. For more information or to purchase tickets visit http://studo.umkc.edu/psa/ or call Jamal at (816) 828-9786.
