Recently UMKC announced plans for a unified commencement ceremony that would precede the traditional ceremonies of each academic unit. Interim Chancellor Dr. Steven Lehmkuhle and Interim Provost Dr. Bruce Bubacz hope a unified commencement will make graduation a much more "prominent" event than the focused commencement ceremonies have been in the past.
ASSC Vice President Justin Smith said, "The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences asked us to see if students wanted a second graduation for just College of Arts and Sciences students."
The council has not decided how or when to conduct surveys. The survey could be executed in a number of ways. Polling stations in Royall Hall, forms passed out in large lecture classes, e-mail, and surveys through the advising office are all under consideration.
President Sarah Peters proposed the council find out more information soon, because any changes would affect the upcoming May graduation.
Doling out money to various organizations who submitted requests took up the majority of the meeting. Comptroller Josh Brunkhorst announced adjustments had been made and the AASC had "a little over $25,000 in the budget." The council distributed funds totaling about $2,000 to four different organizations. Most groups did not receive all the money requested and were told to seek more funds from alternative sources like the SGA.
In other business, four votes approved SGA President Marcus Leach as a new member of the council. Leach was not present to see his membership granted, but Smith said Leach let the council know he would not attend Tuesday's meeting.
ASSC currently has 12 active members. To become a member, students must simply attend two full meetings and turn in an application before attending a third meeting, or the meeting at which he or she wants the application reviewed. The council then votes whether to extend membership or not. A requirement of all ASSC members is to attend every meeting.
