Xavier Akoka came to UMKC in the fall on a two year exchange from Paris to improve his English and Spanish. Upon his arrival, Akoka began seeking ways to meet people. Surprisingly, he found that the easiest means of meeting people was not a club or fraternity.
Junior guard Chazny Morris entered The Summit League Tournament with a reputation. Last week, she was named to the all-Summit League First Team for the 2008-09 season. Morris finished the regular season with 501 points. She had an average of 17. 3 points per game overall and 16.
The UMKC men's and women's golf teams are both gearing up for their second round of tournaments for the spring 2009 season. The men's team kicked off the season with the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif., where they placed 14th out of 18 teams. Their next stop is the 2009 Louisiana Classics on March 9-10, to be held at the Oakbourne Country Club (par 72; 7,141-yard) in Lafayette, La.
Junior Bret Berryman was named The Summit League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week. Berryman got the nod after posting wins at the top singles and doubles position Feb. 27 in the 7-0 sweep over Creighton. "It's great - it's really exciting," Berryman said.
Summit League Tournament This Saturday the UMKC Lady Kangaroos battled the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in the Summit League Conference Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D., but lost 73-66 and were eliminated. The game proved to be a thriller as UMKC was looking to upset the number two team in the conference.

The UMKC women's tennis team lost another match on Sunday against Iowa State. The 6-1 defeat in Ames, Iowa, took the team's record to 0-7. "We're still playing Big 12 schools and just conferences that are pretty tough," Hale said. "But we're starting to knock on the door of some of these guys.
