More than 200 pairs of boots and civilian shoes lined the University Walkway on Nov. 17, representing the soldiers, marines and civilians killed in the Iraq War. The boots and shoes were part of "Eyes Wide Open," an exhibit designed to increase awareness of the human and economic costs of the ongoing war in Iraq.

In preparation for the new year, the Student Government Association (SGA) reviewed the possible increases in student fees based upon the projected consumer price index. After discovering a neighborhood around a local elementary school has 45 percent worse air quality than the national average, UMKC students teamed up with the school to help preserve the young students' health. UMKC's Urban Planning and Design (AUPD) collaborated on a project to help give students at Crispus Attucks Elementary School a chance to improve their environment and help prevent the growing number of students at the school who are developing asthma.

Students, faculty and staff members sporting jeans and UMKC apparel were able to further enhance their school spirit and the university's educational experience Nov. 20 by participating in UMKC Logo and Blue Jeans Day. After eight months of work, a preliminary carbon baseline has been completed for UMKC identifying 12,616 metric tons of carbon annually emitted into the atmosphere by the university. Kaye Johnston, coordinator of Building Services for Campus Facilities Management and director of the Sustainability Team, joined forces with former Student Government Association President Sean McClain to complete the carbon emissions inventory.
On Nov. 22, the Indian Student Association (ISA) produced a successful rendition of an Indian celebration entitled Surabhi. Surabhi, originating from Hindu mythology, is a cow that granted humans their wishes. In India during the Surabhi festivities, there is typically a wide array of fireworks.
A UMKC Conservatory student was robbed at gunpoint by two men Nov. 17 as she left the Performing Arts Center (PAC) after an opera rehearsal. The thieves took 18-year-old Sarah Brozovich's purse which contained $70, a debit card, an iPod and her cell phone.
Green team preps for new year The Sustainability Team wrapped up this year's business and began preparing for next year at their final meeting of the semester, Nov. 19.
