Ideal Learning Environment (ILE) classrooms equipped with computers, projectors and Internet access are spreading across campus in a broadband revolution. In a move long awaited by many students and professors, UMKC Information Services (IS) announced it would install another 63 ILE systems by June 2009.
Architecture students from across the Midwest and members of the community gathered at the Nelson-Atkins Museum Friday to learn about sustainable design through the story of rebuilding Greensburg, Kan., after the town was devastated by a tornado. The presentation, called "Greensburg, Kansas: Rebuilding a Green Town," kicked off the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Midwest Quad's three-day conference where students studied design across town and attended discussions with experts in the field.
Complying with UMKC's goal for all new construction on campus to be environmentally friendly, work is underway on the Oak Street Residence Hall using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification standards. Scheduled to open August 2009, the 80,000 square foot, four-story residence hall will be able to house 328 students.
A panel of deans and directors from Kansas City educational institutions met at the School of Education Monday evening, affording students interested in college administration careers a chance to discuss the field's challenges and opportunities. The conversation was sponsored by UMKC's Career Services Center and featured four panelists with extensive credentials in higher education administration including: UMKC's Vice Provost for Academic Programs, Mary Lou Hines-Fritts, William Jewell College's Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life, Ernie Stufflebean, Rockhurst University's Assistant Dean of Students, Sean Grube, and Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley's Dean of Administrative Services, Thomas Walker.
Understanding the human psyche is a large part of health and wellness. The Wholistic Health Fair, held in Pierson Auditorium on Sunday, provided an opportunity to increase understanding of the human body. It offered information about topics ranging from herbal treatments to the effects of magnetism on human health.
Medical School names endowed chair - The UMKC Medical School, the Vision Research Center and Truman Medical Center named Peter Koulen as the Felix and Carmen Sabates Missouri Endowed Chair in Vision Research. Koulen, who has focused his studies in pharmacology, molecular biology and neuroscience, comes to UMKC from the University of North Texas in Fort Worth.
