Eight games into its 2008 season, the UMKC men's soccer team finally got to play a match at home. And they made sure they did not disappoint a modest, but faithful, gathering of supporters Saturday afternoon at sunny Bourke Field. The Kangaroos opened their Summit League conference schedule by burying the Mastodons of University of Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) 4-0.
I never really had the talent for baseball. Now, my second cousin, Bob Allison, he did. He was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1959. In his 13 seasons with the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins, he was a three-time All-Star. Roos vs. Golden Grizzlies With two conference matches last weekend, the Roos broke even. Oakland University (OU) took on the Roos Saturday night, just one week after falling to UMKC 2-3. This time the outcome was different. The Roos lost in three sets - 19-25, 23-25 and 13-25.
The UMKC volleyball team traveled last Wednesday to Niagara, N.Y. and then Thursday to Buffalo, N.Y. for two out-of-conference games. The Roos faced the Niagara University (NU) Purple Eagles in a four-set match, which finished in a 1-3 loss, but came back to Kansas City redeemed, after beating Canisius University (CU) 3-2 the following evening.
Softball squads compete in Blue and Gold Game, schedule fundraisers Players from UMKC's softball team squared off in the Blue and Gold Game, an intrasquad scrimmage held Sunday afternoon at Cleveland Park. Sophomore pitcher Taya Upkes allowed three hits and added two RBIs, while junior second baseman Carli Slagle went three for four, with two runs scored as the UMKC squad blanked the UMKC Blue team 6-0.
