With the resignation of the two driving forces behind the possible sale of the UMKC School of Dentistry building, questions still linger about the fate of the building. Guy Bailey, former UMKC chancellor, and Michael Reed, dean of the School of Dentistry, who's resignation takes effect Sept.
College presidents and chancellors around the nation have been discussing a request for lawmakers to lower the drinking age to 18. This discussion, which started back in July, is known as the Amethyst Initiative and is causing ears to perk up at colleges all around the metro.
The Miller Nichols Library is looking for a new head of the Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections and the Marr Sound archives. The Special Collections is an archive unique to UMKC. It contains many one-of-a-kind letters and manuscripts among other historical documents.
The Miller Nichols Library is offering a new service for faculty and staff. Librarians can now scan pages from books in the library, then e-mail them to the desktops of professors. The service is free and usually takes no more than three days. Cindy Thompson, librarian and main advocate for the project, said many people have wanted this service.
With a vision of a Green campus, UMKC's Sustainability Team has remained focused this year in an attempt to accomplish seven goals laid out for 2008. Established in 2003 with only five members, the team is now 78 people strong and growing. Each year, the students, staff and faculty unite to identify campus inefficiencies, put together plans of action and accomplish the goals for the betterment of the campus and environment.
According to the Missouri Secretary of State office, to register to vote, one must meet three qualifications: be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Missouri and 18-years-old on Election Day. To be entitled to vote, you must be registered to vote in the jurisdiction of your home prior to the election.

High school and middle school students in the Kansas City metro area are getting a heads-up on what it's like to be in medical school with help from the UMKC Medical School's Pipeline Program.
With 674 players, the "World's Largest Marble Tournament" was held at UMKC Aug. 23. Last year, marble enthusiasts attempted to break the record, but failed with only about 500 participants, leaving them just short of the 569 players in the world record event held in 1998.
UMKC named new Sirridge Professor Dr. Lynda Payne, associate professor in the History Department of the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences, was named to the Sirridge Professorship in the Medical Humanities.
