Student government finds last minute replacement

After the resignation of Jessica Fenger over the summer, the Student Government Association (SGA) voted on a replacement administrative vice president to sit on its executive board at the Aug. 21 meeting. Klassie Alcine, former president of Arts and Sciences student council, was elected to the position with a vote of 13 in favor, three against and four abstentions.

UMKC Provost Gail Hackett presented a new high-tech initiative to the Faculty Senate at its meeting on Aug. 18. It is called the "Decision Theater." "Leo's [Interim Chancellor Morton] already off and running with it," Hackett said. "He'll probably have the money to build it before we've even finished talking about it.

Southwest Early College offers jumpstart

Students in sixth and ninth grade looking for a new kind of high school education will begin filling the halls of the Southwest Early College Campus (SWECC) Aug. 25. SWECC is a partnership between UMKC, the Kansas City, Mo. School district, Kansas City's Partnership for Regional Educational Preparation, the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation to offer Kansas City kids a chance to complete a minimum of 20 college credits during high school.

Cafeteria serves cage-free eggs

UMKC is now serving cage-free eggs in the cafeteria and Einstein Bros. Bagels in Royall Hall. Last Tuesday, the school highlighted this new policy by serving specialty grilled egg sandwiches and traditional scrambled eggs in addition to an omelet station in the cafeteria.

Violence Prevention Education After receiving a grant over the summer from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women, UMKC is now offering a Violence Prevention Education class to all incoming students. The program, offered to freshman and transfer students, will address issues relevant to college students and present resources available to UMKC students.

Aug. 15 1:56 p.m. Injury - Officers responded to a report of electrocution at the Medical School. The victim was treated by the police department.
