Malfunction delays message of campus closing

A glitch with the UMKC Alert! system left some out in the cold on UMKC's last snow day. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, UMKC decided the winter weather was severe enough to close the university. But when they sent the closing message out through the new emergency alert system, some students, faculty and staff did not receive the alert until much later.

SGA senator presents resolution to impeach president pro tem

A resolution proposed in the Student Government Association (SGA) meeting last Wednesday seeks to impeach President Pro Tempore LaDonna McCullough on the basis of conflict of interest. McCullough has been serving as president pro tempore to the SGA since early last semester.

Missouri college students write bill to affect textbook pricing

Many students dread the cost of textbooks each semester, and finally someone is doing something about it. The Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM) with help from the Missouri Students Association (MSA) wrote a bill, called the Textbook Transparency Act, to lower the price of textbooks right now and in the long run.

A group of student leaders from universities across Missouri have come together to create the Missouri Higher Education Consortium (MHEC) for the purpose of lobbying for higher education.

If a student has questions about how to start off a paragraph, how to write a research paper or even editing a doctoral thesis, the Writing Center on 52nd Street and Rockhill Road is the place to go. The Writing Center celebrated International Writing Centers Week last week by showcasing music, art, prose and poetry from people representing countries around the world.

UMKC's technology dollars at work

The technology at UMKC is always evolving. In 2007, UMKC rolled out Pathway, and in the fall semester UMKC Alert! saw its debut. As students log in to UMKC's Web site multiple times a day, there are many things they may not consider. What exactly do the technology fees pay for? How safe is students' information? Who's keeping this stuff current? The average technology fee per student is $159 a semester, according to the 2006-07 Information Services (IS) executive summary.

Vigil to offer support, condolences for NIU victims UMKC will hold a vigil at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 on the walkway leading to the University Center to honor the memory of victims and offer hope and support. "All of us at UMKC are shocked and saddened by the shootings at Northern Illinois University yesterday, and our hearts go out to our colleagues and students at NIU," said Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, in an e-mail to students on Feb.

Feb. 8 7:15 p.m. Larceny - A student reported a debit card missing from an unsecured locker in Swinney Recreation Center. The incident occurred between 5 and 5:15 p.m. Feb. 9 10:40 a.m. Information - Officers investigated a report of a suspicious person in Oak Street Residence Hall.
