Junior midfielder Garret Guthrie provided the glitz as well as the goals for the UMKC Kangaroos Soccer squad Sunday afternoon. Booting through both tallies inside the first thirty minutes of action, Guthrie and his teammates held on to defeat Central Arkansas 2-1.
When soccer player Josh White began attending classes at UMKC his freshman year, his status as a student-athlete made the transition from high school to college a little less perilous. A Liberal Arts major and senior defender for the Kangaroos, White said the camaraderie he felt initially among his peers from the soccer squad - and other university sports teams - helped him feel like he was a part of a unique family.
Logging approximately 8,000 miles of U.S. Interstates, state highways and more than likely a few county roads in search of the next Kangaroo recruit, UMKC softball Head Coach Meredith Smith is happy to be back home coaching her squad this fall. The determined coach made stops in Temecula, Calif.
UMKC junior Jimmy Keown plodded through Ozark terrain to place fourth in the men's cross country 8K run ahead of 27 other male runners. The Missouri State Classic, run in Springfield, Mo. Sept. 15, also saw two other Kangaroos, this time on the female side of the competition, tie for 8th place in a field of 41 runners.
Volleyball drove sophomore Jamie Hagerman to do more than simply dive for digs; it drove her to the UMKC campus and Head Coach Geno Frugoli's door as well. The Outside hitter began college as a Cyclone, not a Kangaroo. Hagerman started off at Iowa State University for a year before transferring to UMKC.
The UMKC Kangaroos played host to the Western Illinois University (WIU) Westerwinds in a raucous, emotionally charged volleyball match. The Roos fell short in efforts to post their first Summit League victory of the season, 2-3. In game one, the Westerwinds plundered and pillaged the score table early, jumping out to a 18-14 lead.
The UMKC volleyball team fell to a more confident Wichita State University (WSU) squad, 10-30, 22-30 and 16-30, dropping the match 0-3. Playing in front of a spirited Wichita crowd of more than 1,500 patrons at the Charles Koch Arena Tuesday night, the Roos never seemed able to gain a solid footing.
In June, UMKC Athletics Director Tim Hall appointed J.W. VanDenBorn director of UMKC golf. VanDenBorn previously served in a lesser capacity as coach for the men's golf team only. VanDenBorn's new duties include coaching responsibilities for both the men's and women's golf teams.
The UMKC men's and women's golf teams finished in 13th and 12th place respectively in tournaments held over the week of Sept.17. The men's squad competed in the Kansas Invitational held at the Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The women's team participated at the Western Illinois Autumn Invitational which took place at the Harry Mussato Golf Course in Macomb, Ill.
It goes without saying that LT and Peyton are destined to rack up some serious digits on the fantasy gridiron. Once you get past those studs, there are no guarantees. Well, it's probably a safe bet that at least a couple of Bengals will visit the slammer and Ricky Williams will (again) be denied reinstatement, but most leagues don't assess points for those stats.
