Makuza shakes up the Blue Room

Makuza, now the official salsa band of UMKC, painted the Blue Room with the radiant colors of Afro-Latin music Thursday, Aug. 30. Although the Blue Room presents Makuza regularly, it hosted a significant event this time, the inaugural event of Afro-Latin Connection, the newest student organization at UMKC.

Artist creates funhouse on campus

Friday I walked into a fully-lit funhouse. I was still fully creeped out. Jaqwan Sirls' exhibit "Carnival" opened Friday at the UMKC African American History and Culture House. Sirls is the co-owner, founder and designer of Happy Rhino Clothing. He is attending Rockhurst University, majoring in English with a minor in theatre.

The New Pornographers get conservative

"Challengers," The New Pornographers' latest album, is ultimately a test of patience. The Canadian band has earned their super-group status with a collection of stellar solo artists including Carl Newman, Dan Bejar and Neko Case. The band's brand of well-crafted, cerebral pop rock earned them attention with 2003's "Electric Version," followed by the incredible "Twin Cinema" of 2005.

As a child growing up in an Italian/Irish neighborhood in South Philadelphia, I was exposed to quite a bit of opera. It would be playing in the background at various family functions.
