This May the Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council announced that the conference would be formally changing its name to the Summit League. The name change is part of an initiative called The Summit Plan. The goal of The Summit Plan is to improve the overall athletic image of the conference and bring a more intense focus on the welfare of each student-athlete.
University of Missouri - Kansas City Athletics Director Tim Hall's plate just got a little fuller to start the 2007-08 academic year. That's because on Aug. 7, Chancellor Guy Bailey, Ph.D., announced the start of the school's NCAA Certification Process. Actually, Hall was made aware that time was drawing near during the interview process for the year long period of self evaluation and subsequent stamp of approval by the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification.
University of Missouri - Kansas City volleyball coach Geno Frugoli is passionate about his sport. After sixteen years of teaching in his chosen profession the flame continues to burn. "I wake up every morning and can't believe I get to coach volleyball for a living," Frugoli said.
The University of Missouri - Kansas City cross country team opens the 2007-08 season Sept. 1 at the Bob Timmons Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The event at Rim Rock will also be the team's first competition as a member of the new Summit League. Head Track and Field coach Theo Hamilton is excited about the competition level in the new conference and the possibilities it presents for UMKC Cross Country.
Senior forward Stephen Mannino's tally in the 73rd minute gave the University of Missouri-Kansas City men's soccer team a 1-0 exhibition victory over the Wildcats of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Saturday night. Mannino's goal, a header off a feed from junior midfielder Garret Guthrie, was slightly deflected by a Baker University defender before getting past Wildcat goalkeeper Alex Burton.
The lazy days of summer 2007 have come and gone as we put our noses back into the books for another year. Professors foam at the mouth like rabid dogs … okay, maybe that analogy is a bit extreme, but the message isn't that hard to see, is it? Afternoons spent at Royals and T-Bones baseball games, long floats down the Niantic river, and breezy evenings at the Starlight Theatre are all coming to a screeching halt as the fall semester begins.
