In a lawsuit filed Aug. 2, DeLana Sattarin, graduate student of Sociology, alleges Dr. Peter Singelmann, professor of Sociology, used the N-word during a Jan. 18 class discussion in an effort to silence her. Sattarin was unavailable for comment. Singelmann, in Mexico at press time, was contacted by the University News via email.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Office gives away t-shirts that declare "I am more than a label," but UMKC has been labeled. According to "The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students," UMKC is one of the top 100 friendliest campuses for the LGBT population.
As doors opened to the Oak Street and Cherry Street Residence Halls on Thursday, a rush of new and returning faces started to fill the place they will call home. These two home communities house approximately 900 people, 559 of which live in Oak Street Hall.

International students had their first mandatory student orientation session in Pierson Auditorium last Tuesday and Wednesday. The full-immersion event oriented students into life in the United States, Kansas City, and at UMKC. Students gathered to experience opening their first bank account, finding their first apartment, and to meet other international students.
UMKC's sister school in Columbia is on a quest to reclaim the past. The University of Missouri-Columbia is trying to slice off the hyphenated part of its name, leaving just the University of Missouri as the official name, which was the school's name before 1963.
UMKC police chief may leave for WSU Chief of Police Scott Shelton is one of three finalists for a similar position at Washington State University. If selected, he would start the new job early in the fall semester. WSU administrators expect to make their decision within a week.
