In his first personnel action as the University of Missouri-Kansas City director of athletics, Tim Hall terminated former head basketball coach Rich Zvosec effective immediately. "In our continuing commitment to a strong and successful athletic program, we will begin an immediate and deliberate search for the next Head Coach," said Hall in a released statement.

UMKC Chancellor Guy Bailey has big plans for the University - $300 million worth. That's the price tag for building initiatives in the next three years. He said the cost will be "mostly on other people's nickel." Some projects will, however, be funded by the University's debt capacity, such as the $70 million Miller Nichols Library expansion.
International students at UMKC paid $900 for health insurance this academic year. Next year, international students will pay $967, a 7.4 percent increase. Last year the rate was $843. The fee is included in their tuition and is not optional. "It goes up a little every year; there is never a dramatic jump," said Sandra Handley, administrator of Student Health and Wellness.
UMKC honors students know something must be done to save the environment. "Here in the U.S., we take energy, among other resources, for granted," said honors student Phaedra Dowell, senior. "To put it bluntly, our current style of living is completely unsustainable, and if we don't wise up, our children will have some serious issues to deal with.
As part of Delta Week, Delta Sigma Theta sorority presented "Real Talk about Education." The four panelists - Janita Butler, Dr. Sharon Byrd, Dr. Tammy Counts and Claudette Scott - discussed their experiences growing up in disadvantaged environments and receiving a college education.
Jennifer DeHaemers, director of Admissions, attended last week's faculty senate meeting to quell concerns about the time it takes academic units to receive student applications. Senate Vice-Chair Steven Driever, geosciences, said an international student applied and received a letter in February that eight items from the application file were missing, though the items had been sent.
Campus Spring break later than usual UMKC's spring break will come three weeks later than in previous years. Spring break begins at the end of the day on March 25, and classes resume April 2. At last week's faculty senate meeting, Professor Cory Beard, computing and engineering, asked Provost Bruce Bubacz why the week of spring break changed.
