Where's Opie?" is a phrase that's taken on significant meaning for the UMKC and Kansas City community. Sophomore Jesse Ross has been missing for more than six weeks. Nineteen-year-old Ross, nicknamed "Opie" for his pale complexion, was last seen Nov. 21. He was visiting Chicago with UMKC's Model UN team for the American Model United Nations International Conference.
The wrecking ball took its first tentative swings at the south tower of Twin Oaks last Wednesday around noon. Clouds of dust drifted toward Brookside Blvd., but few people stopped to observe what was happening. Frederic Neuforge, 31, was busy taking pictures for his father, a building engineer.
UMKC graduate student Kyle Warwick, 33, has a print disability. To study, he needs his textbooks in an audible format. "My first semester here, in spring 2006, was very difficult," said Warwick. "I didn't get the materials until many weeks after my courses had started.
Many buildings at UMKC need renovations to keep up with the almost daily changes in students' lives. The majority of school buildings are more than 50 years old. At the same time, facility needs are constantly evolving, driven by changing demographics, new instructional programs and regulatory mandates.
Students enrolled for the Winter/Spring 2007 semester should have scheduled classes already. Those still needing to schedule classes may face difficulty, because many courses filled up quickly and others were cancelled due to low enrollment. Tom Stroik, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, estimates that 4-5 percent, or about 64 classes out of 850, were cancelled.
The search for a new president of the University of Missouri System has begun. Current UM System President Elson S. Floyd accepted a new position as president of Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. The Board of Curators is organizing a search for a replacement to lead the four University of Missouri campuses, which includes UMKC.
UMKC welcomed Brenda Bethman as the new Women's Center director Jan. 2. Previously she spent more than five years working at Texas A&M University as the program coordinator of the Women's Center and then director of the Women's & Gender Equity Resource Center.
Campus Star editor receives award Kansas City Star editor John Mark Eberhart will receive the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Achievement Award for 2006. Eberhart received his M.A. in English from UMKC and worked his way up from copy editor to current book editor for The Star.
