Jacques Bitoun arrived less than a week ago in Kansas City, the place he now calls home. The 24-year-old advertising major left New Orleans for Missouri after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast last Monday. Last week after Labor Day, Jacques began his new life in Kansas City.

The relatively rare and unknown disease meningitis has prompted increased concern at UMKC recently. Meningitis can strike out of the blue and kill within hours. Two weeks ago an autopsy report revealed a University of Missouri (UM) football player died of rarely fatal viral meningitis.

The UMKC Student Government Association (SGA) voted last Wednesday against a resolution which condemned giving out personal information by the University to the Department of Defense (DoD). Some senators argued that not cooperating with the DoD could jeopardize federal funding to the school.

Tent State invited students to play wiffleball in the Quad last week. Fletcher Schubert and Hyder Malik took time out between classes. Students are welcome to attend this event every Wednesday at 3 p.m.
UMKC scientists receive invitation from Illinois Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich recently sent letters to around 80 Missouri scientists inviting them to research in his state. This invitation comes on the heels of worries from Missourians that stem cell research may soon be banned in the state.
